Welcome to A. Harry Moore Laboratory School
Since 1921, A. Harry Moore has been a place where every child is known: by name, by the way they communicate, by what makes them laugh, and by what they can do. As a laboratory school of Kean University, our teachers, therapists, nurses, paraprofessionals and technology team work as one team around each student. Our students work hard, make choices, build friendships and get ready for the lives they want.
From the principal
A Message from Our Principal
As principal, my commitment is straightforward: every student in our care receives an education grounded in high expectations, delivered by educators who are rigorously trained and deeply skilled across their disciplines, whether they are teachers, teaching assistants or related service providers. We don't separate quality from special education. We build it into everything we do.
From our youngest learners through our transition-age students, we cultivate real skills and real competence. Career readiness isn't something that starts in high school; it is woven through every classroom and every service we provide. We teach independence, problem-solving and the capacity to work. We teach students to understand their strengths and to build on them. We teach families and sending districts that their child is safe, supported and moving forward.
Our educators don't just meet the requirements. They exceed them. They bring expertise in behavior, academics, related services and workforce readiness. They know how to differentiate lessons for a three-year-old and prepare a nineteen-year-old for life after school. That intensity of preparation and commitment to skill and rigor is what sets us apart.

Communication is more than speech. At AHM, students communicate with spoken words, AAC devices, eye gaze, switches, pictures and symbols, gestures, sign, and their own individualized systems, and every one of those is a real voice with real opinions, humor, and boundaries.
A Path from Early Childhood to Adult Life
1. Early Childhood
First discoveries, play, and first words, spoken, signed, or on a device.
2. Elementary
Reading, math, and daily-living skills with real expectations.
3. Middle School
More choice, more responsibility, more self-advocacy.
4. L.I.F.T.
Learning for adult life on the Kean Jersey City campus, ages 15 to 21 through community-based instruction, work readiness, transition planning.

Technology & Assistive Technology
Technology for every way of learning, communicating and creating.
Switch access, eye gaze, touch, AAC, coding, 3D printing, green screen, robotics. Technology supports instruction at AHM; it never replaces the teacher, the therapist or the friend sitting next to you.
Career & Transition
The community is a classroom.
Students practice money, ordering, navigation, safety and conversation in real stores, libraries and campus spaces, not just on a worksheet.

Life, Independence and Future Transition prepares students ages 15 to 21 for the communities, workplaces, and adult lives they choose, in a kitchen, an office, a store, and on the Kean Jersey City campus.
Related services work together
Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language services, music therapy, and nursing are woven into the school day, in classrooms, the gym, the kitchen, and the community, and planned together with teachers.
There is always something happening at AHM.
Prom, performances, Special Olympics, dance, celebrations, and the everyday joy of a school that feels like family.
A new chapter
AHM + Kean Jersey City
In 2026, Kean University and New Jersey City University became one, and the campus next door became Kean Jersey City. It is the next chapter in a university relationship that began in 1963.
