  • Students ages 3 to 21 with disabilities who are placed by their local school district’s Child Study Team. Students are typically classified as Preschool Disabled, Learning and Language Disabled, or Multiply Disabled.

  • Placement goes through your district’s Child Study Team, followed by an intake interview at AHM. You are welcome to tour first, call 201-200-3138 to arrange a visit.

  • Placement and tuition are arranged between your sending school district and the school; families do not pay tuition directly.

  • Yes. Physical, occupational, speech-language, and music therapy are delivered at school, coordinated with the classroom and your child’s IEP.

  • Yes, certified school nurses are on site every day, and we run a tube-feeding program and physiatrist, orthotic, and wheelchair clinics.

  • Transportation is arranged by your sending district. If you have a question about a bus route or pickup time, call the main office at 201-200-3138.

  • As a laboratory school under Kean University, AHM hosts future teachers and therapists for supervised observation and field experience. University students are always supervised by AHM staff.

Getting started

  • Students ages 3 to 21, from early childhood through the transition to adult life, including the L.I.F.T. program for transition-age students.

  • We meet with you and your child, review the IEP and records, and talk through how your child's needs can be met here. Two forms are completed before the interview: the Interdisciplinary Intake Form and the Medical Intake Form. See Admissions & Tours.

  • Your child's current IEP, recent evaluations, medical information for the school nurse, and any communication system or device your child uses.

  • Call the main office at 201-200-3138 or send a note through the Contact page. Tours are welcome any time.

Learning & services

  • Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language services, music therapy, nursing and health services, adapted physical education, and sensory supports, provided as written in each student's IEP. See Related Services.

  • Yes. Communication is more than speech. Students communicate with spoken words, AAC devices and apps, eye gaze, switches, pictures and symbols, gestures, sign, and their own individualized systems, and staff learn each student's system. See Technology & AT.

  • Switch access, eye gaze, touch, adapted keyboards and mice, AAC devices, and built-in accessibility features, matched to each student by their team, plus an Accessible Technology Lab with coding, robotics, 3D design, and multimedia tools.

  • Life, Independence and Future Transition: our program for transition-age students on the Kean Jersey City campus, where students practice cooking, independent living, work, and community skills in real environments. See L.I.F.T..

  • Learning that happens in real places: stores, libraries, the campus, and workplaces, where students practice money, ordering, navigation, safety, and conversation. See Career & Transition.

Day to day

  • Day to day, classrooms use Seesaw to share your child's work, photos, and messages. The school also calls, sends notices home, and posts events on the calendar. See the Family Hub.

  • Ask your child's teacher for the class code, then sign in at app.seesaw.me or in the Seesaw Family app. See Learning Tools & Family Connections.
